Humanitarian Photography: Documenting Education Initiatives in Rural Uganda
RedEarth Village Schools (REVS) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing quality education to children in rural Uganda.
Established in 2008, it is an education charity that funds and supports schools. It enables children in Uganda – who might otherwise lack access to education—to attend regular schooling.
The primary objective of the charity is to improve school facilities, train teachers, and encourage parents to send their children to school, helping to break the cycle of poverty prevalent in the region.
Its vision, “Building a brighter future for Ugandan village children – TOGETHER,” reflects its deep commitment to empowering and supporting village girls. The charity’s Founding Trustee, Victoria Beach, has recently been honoured with an MBE by King Charles for her outstanding work in empowering girls in Uganda.

RedEarth Village Schools Humanitarian Photography Assignments
The Clarity Photos team has documented the charity’s incredible work, having been engaged by REVS in 2023 and again in 2025. We were challenged with documenting life at the schools, the impact of the initiatives that the charity supports and capturing a sense of the place and the people who live there.
Our humanitarian photography tells a compelling story of hope, resilience, and transformation in some of Uganda’s most impoverished rural communities.

Education and Empowerment for Children in Uganda
In rural Uganda, extreme poverty is a daily reality. Ninety per cent of 10-year-old children are unable to read a simple sentence or solve basic arithmetic problems. Many primary schools are in disrepair, and parents often keep their children at home to help with household chores instead of attending school.
Education is about more than just providing classrooms and textbooks; it is the foundation of opportunity and change.
At RedEarth Village Schools, students not only gain access to education and academic knowledge but also practical skills that uplift entire communities.
The Role of Humanitarian Photography in Education Advocacy
When we embarked on this project, our goal was to do more than just take photos—we aimed to challenge perceptions about rural education in Africa.
Too often, underserved communities are portrayed through a lens of struggle and deprivation. While these challenges are real, our approach to documentary humanitarian photography focuses on strength, progress, and the transformative power of education.
By sharing authentic and uplifting stories, our humanity imagery contributes to a more respectful and impactful portrayal of these communities.
Through this project, we sought to:
- Highlight the resilience and determination of students living in poverty yet who are striving for a better future
- Capture the challenges students face and the opportunities education provides
- Showcase the dedication of teachers who are shaping young minds despite limited resources
- Illustrate the tangible impact of sustainable school development and educational support
- Create compelling photographs that connect emotionally with donors, helping them feel invested in the cause.
Humanitarian Photography in Action: A Catalyst for Change
As a humanitarian photography team, we focus on visually conveying the impact of non-profit initiatives in a way that inspires action.
Our work with RedEarth Village Schools highlights:
- The joy and determination of students eager to learn
- The dedication of teachers providing life-changing education
- The community-driven approach to sustainable school development.
These images play a crucial role in raising awareness, securing funding, and supporting the charity’s long-term vision.
By documenting real-life stories, our humanitarian photography provides an emotional connection that encourages donors, partners, and volunteers to contribute to the cause.
Visual Storytelling: Raising Awareness & Galvanising Support
At Clarity Photos, we believe that humanitarian photography is a powerful tool for change. Through visual storytelling, we help organisations like RedEarth Village Schools engage supporters, secure funding, and build long-term impact.
Documenting not only the beneficiaries of humanitarian efforts but also the dedicated individuals providing support, we ensure that the full scope of an organisation’s work is showcased.
The images captured during this project have been featured extensively in:
- Fundraising campaigns, grant applications and donor reports, helping to drive donations for school expansion
- Social media, as part of ongoing awareness campaigns
- Educational outreach materials, illustrating the real-world impact of RedEarth’s work
- Press and media stories, raising awareness of the importance of sustainable education initiatives.
By capturing powerful humanitarian images, we have facilitated the sharing of stories that form the foundation of this charity’s mission.
The humanitarian photographs that we made are directly contributing to the successful running of the charity and tell the story in a way that text alone simply couldn’t.
Ethical Humanitarian Photography: Telling Stories with Dignity
Responsible humanitarian photography is about ensuring dignity, authenticity, and respect in visual storytelling. We take great care to:
- Represent individuals with dignity, avoiding exploitative imagery, and ensuring students, teachers, and parents are active participants in their own story, not just subjects
- Ensure informed consent, allowing subjects to share their stories on their terms
- Balance realism and optimism, highlighting both challenges and progress.
Ethical storytelling is essential to shifting the narrative around poverty and humanitarian work, fostering a sense of empowerment rather than victimhood.
We show progress, achievements, and how funds are being used to create positive tangible change.
