Charity Campaigning: Communicating The Vital Work of Stonepillow
Founded in 1989, Stonepillow operates hubs and hostels that offer a safe space where individuals can shower, wash clothes, access fresh clothing, and receive daily meals. These meals not only provide nourishment but also create an inclusive environment where people can connect with support staff and access essential care.
Beyond immediate needs, Stonepillow provides a wide range of support services, including healthcare access, English lessons, and benefits advice.
Their primary goal is to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills, and support required to secure and maintain permanent housing, helping them regain stability and independence.
Visual Storytelling: Challenging Misconceptions about Homelessness
Clarity Photos was initially commissioned to document Stonepillow’s work for their new website. However, as we delved deeper, we saw a greater opportunity for visual storytelling, and the project evolved.
Meeting Stonepillow’s clients and hearing their stories firsthand highlighted a crucial need: to challenge the widespread misconceptions about homelessness.
Many assume that those without homes have made poor life choices, yet we found that most people we met had experienced sudden illness, unexpected job loss, or eviction from privately rented accommodation due to circumstances beyond their control.
It became apparent that these were the stories that needed to be told.
By capturing authentic portraits and documenting real-life experiences of those who were experiencing homelessness, we aimed to reshape public perceptions and highlight the reality that homelessness can happen to anyone.
Charity Photography: Driving Awareness and Support Through Visual Storytelling
It has been a pleasure to work with Stonepillow as their charity photographer and to support with charity campaigning projects far beyond the initial photography brief.
To date, the scope of the work has included:
- Photographing the charity’s vital services and facilities in Chichester and at local hubs.
- Documenting the personal journeys of Stonepillow’s clients as they rebuild their lives thanks to Stonepillow’s support.
- Creating visuals for use within charity campaigning literature and marketing resources, including the Stonepillow website.

Our documentary-style images and stories became the foundation of a major fundraising campaign—one that successfully raised awareness and support for Stonepillow’s mission. Many were also featured in the local press.
